Project Blue Light

Project Blue Light got its start in Philadelphia in 1988, when resident Dolly Craig wrote a letter to the Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) organizations. She wrote that she was placing a blue light in her window during the holiday season to honor her son-in-law, Philadelphia Police Officer Danny Gleason, who was killed while on duty in 1986.

Dolly Craig’s gesture caught on as a way to honor all officers who protect and serve, and to remember those who died in the line of duty.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office invites residents to consider placing a single blue light in a window or outside your home during the holiday season and all year to show support for law enforcement officers.

Project Lifesaver

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office has recently been recertified in Project Lifesaver, a nationally recognized program designed to assist in locating individuals who are prone to wandering due to cognitive conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, autism, or other related disorders.

Project Lifesaver utilizes specialized radio-frequency tracking technology that allows trained deputies to quickly and efficiently locate enrolled individuals during a missing-person emergency.

This program provides significant benefits to Erie County residents and their families by:

  • Reducing search times
  • Increasing recovery success rates
  • Enhancing safety for vulnerable individuals
  • Providing peace of mind to caregivers

The Sheriff’s Office is proud to offer and utilize Project Lifesaver as part of its ongoing commitment to protecting some of the county’s most vulnerable residents.
